To apply for an Italian passport, you must be an Italian citizen.
Not yet an Italian citizen? Visit the Italian Citizenship page to find out if you are eligible. You must first be granted citizenship before you can apply for a passport.
All of the following requirements must be met to apply at this Consulate.
- Not registered? You must register before booking your appointment.
- Already registered? Ensure your address details are current.
- Not eligible for AIRE? You may still attend your appointment. The Consulate will request the delega e nulla osta al rilascio from the Questura in Italy. The passport will only be issued once consent is received.
If your appointment is not confirmed, it will be automatically cancelled by the system.
Over 70 years old? Italian citizens aged 70 or over are not required to book an appointment and may attend the Consulate directly.

- ✓1 passport-sized photograph, not more than 6 months old (available from Australia Post)
- ✓Proof of residential address (Australian driver’s licence or utility bill)
- ✓For applicants born outside Australia: Australian citizenship certificate (original) or a valid Australian visa
- ✓Payment by credit/debit card preferred — view applicable fees
- A valid passport (any nationality)
- A valid Italian passport
- A valid Italian identity card
- A valid Italian driver’s licence
Note: An Australian driver’s licence is NOT accepted as ID. Photocopies or digital copies will not be accepted. Applicants without an original ID document will not be admitted.

- Before the first passport, you must register the child’s birth at the Consulate — at least one week before the appointment.
- Children under 18 require consent from both parents, even in cases of separation, divorce, or adoption.
Attendance requirements by nationality
Both parents EU passport holders
Only one parent needs to attend in person. The attending parent must bring the consent form signed by the absent parent, plus a copy of their ID.
Andrea (Italian) and Rosa (French) apply for their daughter Annalisa’s first passport. If Rosa can’t attend, Andrea brings Rosa’s signed consent form and a copy of her ID.
One parent is a non-EU passport holder
Both parents must attend in person. The consent form must be signed in front of a consular officer.
Francesca (Italian) and Paulo (Brazilian) apply for Leonardo’s passport. Leonardo, Francesca, and Paulo must all be present to sign the consent form before a consular officer.
Some countries require a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Check entry requirements on Viaggiare Sicuri before travelling.
Consular fees apply to all passport applications. Payment is preferred by credit or debit card.
Provided you are eligible, have met all requirements, and submitted all necessary documentation, your passport will be issued and printed on the day of your appointment.
