The Italian passport has a validity of 10 years.
For first passport and passport renewal requests you need to present:
- Passport request form.
- 2 passport-sized photographs not more than 6 months old (you can obtain them from the Australian Post Office).
- Valid ID document or the latest Italian Passport (where applicable) IMPORTANT: Australian diver licence is NOT considered an ID document.
- Proof of residential address (Australian driver’s license or utility bill…)
- For people born outside Australia, Australian citizenship certificate or an Australian visa.
- Payment preferably by credit/debit card (click here for the list of the applicable consular fees)
- Applicants parents of minors must undersign a statutory declaration, included in the passport application form, indicating that the applicant is not the recipient of any provision inhibiting the passport issuance as provided for by current Italian regulation.
The requirement for consent signed by both parents or those exercising parental responsibility regarding the issuance of documents for minors remains unchanged.

In order to request a passport from the Consulate General, you must be already registered or register with AIRE and update your address (if not already done) at least 3 days prior to your appointment. If you are not registered with AIRE, theconsulate General will have to send a request of consent to the Questura in Italy.
IMPORTANT: before booking your appointment to renew/issue your passport, remember to update your consular file on any change of address, marital status, birth of children, marriage, divorce, etc.
