Schengen Visas (from 1 to 90 days in the Schengen area)

A Schengen Visa allows holders to travel to and within the Schengen area from 1 to 90 days. As of March 2023, the 27 countries part of the Schengen area are:

  • Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland

You must lodge the application for a Schengen visa at the Embassy / Consulate of the country that you intend to visit or, if you intend to visit more than one Schengen State, the Embassy / Consulate of the country where you will spend the longest period.

If you intend to visit several Schengen States and the stays will be of equal length, you must apply at the Embassy / Consulate of the country of first entry into the Schengen area.

To apply for a Schengen visa with the Consulate General of Italy in Melbourne, you will need to:

  1. Book your appointment through our online booking system Prenot@mi (click here). We strongly recommend that you book your appointment as soon as you start planning your trip and before making any expenses related to your trip. If you cannot find a suitable appointment with us, we suggest that you periodically check our online booking system to see if any spot becomes available due to other users’ cancellations.
  2. Download a checklist (click here) and come to your appointment with the relevant documentation strictly in hard copy

If you are able to satisfy all requirements during your appointment, visa processing time varies between few days to 14 days depending on each case.

EMERGENCY / URGENT VISA APPLICATIONS

Emergency / urgent visa applications can only be accepted in specific and limited circumstances to be assessed case by case by the Consulate General of Italy in Melbourne.

We can accept emergency / urgency visa applications for the following categories of applicants only:

  • Applicants who have to be admitted into Public or Private hospitals in Italy. A medical certificate issued by an accredited Health Institution in Italy must be provided as proof of admission
  • Applicants going to Italy for business. An official letter from an inviting Italian company must be provided as proof of business activity (see relevant section of visa checklist)
  • Spouses and under 21 children of EU citizens travelling with their EU spouse/parent(s)

HAVING PRE-PURCHASED YOUR FLIGHTS, TRANSPORTS, ACCOMMODATION, ACTIVITIES, INSURANCE, ETC. OR HAVING TO ATTEND A CONFERENCE, A COURSE OR AN EVENT, DOES NOT QUALIFY TO APPLY FOR AN URGENT PROCEDURE.
