Cultural Diplomacy

Wed, 7 Jun 2017

Speaker: Mr Marco Maria Cerbo, Consul General of Italy in Melbourne

Cultural diplomacy, it is said, reveals the soul of a nation. Throughout history, the interaction between peoples, and the exchange of ideas, art, religion, and social structures has consistently improved relations between divergent groups.

In an increasingly globalised, interdependent world, but one confronted by recent challenges to the well-established rules-based order, cultural diplomacy is critical to fostering peace and stability.

AIIA Victoria invites you to join the Consul General of Italy in Melbourne, Mr Marco Maria Cerbo to hear his personal insights into the role of cultural diplomacy, and reflections on his career as a diplomat.

Starting with a definition of diplomacy, he will briefly examine the changes in the role of a diplomat throughout history. He will then focus on cultural diplomacy, and its place as a tool in the modern management of relationships between countries.

Using examples of cultural diplomacy from his professional experiences in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Hong Kong and Melbourne, he will show how more and more States engage in “nation-branding” activities, and their relevance today.
