Italian Nationals facing detention

The Consulate General of Italy in Melbourne can offer assistance to Italian nationals arrested or facing detention in the following manners:

  • Visiting the detainee
  • providing the contact details of lawyers or legal representatives
  • maintaining contacts with the family in Italy
  • providing the detainee with basic everyday items when necessary and permitted by local regulations
  • organizing the detainee’s transfer to Italy in case their detention occurs in a country signatory of the Strasbourg Convention or of other specific bilateral agreements
  • intervening, in certain circumstances, to support requests for pardon on humanitarian grounds.

The Consulate is not able to provide the following assistance:

  • legally represent an Italian national in a Court of Law
  • pay the detainee’s legal expenses.
