The Consulate General of Italy in Melbourne can offer assistance to Italian nationals arrested or facing detention in the following manners:
- Visiting the detainee
- providing the contact details of lawyers or legal representatives
- maintaining contacts with the family in Italy
- providing the detainee with basic everyday items when necessary and permitted by local regulations
- organizing the detainee’s transfer to Italy in case their detention occurs in a country signatory of the Strasbourg Convention or of other specific bilateral agreements
- intervening, in certain circumstances, to support requests for pardon on humanitarian grounds.
The Consulate is not able to provide the following assistance:
- legally represent an Italian national in a Court of Law
- pay the detainee’s legal expenses.
