SAVE THE DATE! AUGUST 9 IS CENSUS NIGHT

On August 9,you’ll have your chance to pause, and take a moment to help shape the future of Australia by participating in the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.

The Census provides a snapshot of Australia’s people and their housing. It aims to count everyone in Australia, wherever they are staying on Census night.

It is important that everyone completes their Census so that businesses, community groups and governments have the evidence they need to plan for the future. Census data tells the story of how the community is changing and where the demand is for services and infrastructure, Victorian Census Director Annette Kelly said. It’s used for a range of important decisions whether it’s allocating GST funding to the states or planning new sports facilities for the local community. Census data is also used to set electoral boundaries and to support planning, policy and funding decisions for local services and infrastructure, including transport, housing, health and education.

From 1 August, most households will receive a letter from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) containing a unique Census Login number for their household and instructions on how to complete the Census online. It will also include a phone number for ordering a paper form. Around 15 million people are expected to complete the Census online in 2016, and the ABS is hoping you’ll do the same. Completing the Census online is fast, easy, secure and environmentally friendly. Paper forms will still be available to anyone who needs or prefers them. Reply paid envelopes will also be provided so you can mail back your completed forms as soon as possible.
